At our regular monthly meeting on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at the North Franklin VFD the association paused the meeting to recognized two individuals for their courageous actions.
On, August 24, 2013 fire departments were dispatched to a possible structure fire in Amwell Township. Capt. Kris Engle of the North Franklin VFD radioed to county dispatch heavy smoke conditions, arriving on-scene to report a working fire. He also reported possible entrapment, when he noticed a vehicle parked in the driveway. Capt. Engle entered the structure and found one victim overcome by smoke, barely breathing. While pulling the victim from the home, a passerby stopped and rendered assistance in removing the victim from the home.
Capt. Kris Engle of the North Franklin VFD and citizen Sam McClenathan of Amwell Township, did without hesitation or regard for their own safety, enter and rescue fire victim Shane Moyer from his burning home in Amwell Township. Their immediate actions resulted in saving Mr. Moyer’s life.
To honor their heroism and lifesaving rescue, the association presented them with a Recognition of Valor plaque and medal. The awards were presented by Lone Pine VFD, Chief Keith Van Varenberg, officer-in-charge of the incident and fire victim Shane Moyer.
In addition, they both received recognition from the Office of the State Fire Commissioner and Pennsylvania Senator Timothy Solobay. Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioner Ed Mann stated “The actions of Capt. Kris Engle and Sam McClenathan in this rescue are in the finest traditions of the Pennsylvania Fire Service and are worthy of note and great respect”.
